A New Perspective on Makeup and Beauty

Makeup is a fun way to highlight natural beauty, play with trends, and express creativity. But it is possible to feel lost when staring at the array of products on the market. While many makeup companies provide a look book to accompany their merchandise, proper application and techniques remain a challenge.

To avoid looking like a clown, I turned to YouTube video tutorials to help me in my efforts. Along the way, I found certain channels have had an impact that exceeds any cosmetic expectation. There is an infinite amount of information out there, but YouTube brings a level of relative personal interaction in regards to the internet. I have grown immensely fond of the following YouTube accounts, in no particular order, here are the top 3:

Jaclyn Hill
Jaclyn is a young, bubbly, self -taught makeup artist with an infectious personality and genuine charm that goes unrivaled. She provides step by step how to videos, provides product reviews, and makes sure that her recommendations have universal appeal. It is no surprise that she has reached over 1 million subscribers, and the positive impact she has on viewer’s lives is astounding from her video comments.

Kandee Johnson
Kandee’s channel is described as “the happiest channel on YouTube.” Her sunny disposition and video variety contribute to her appeal. Not only does Kandee’s channel offer application tutorials, but she offers a glimpse into her own struggles and personal life, making her relatable and helpful in more ways than just through makeup. Kandee’s flawless makeup is, in fact, overshadowed by her beautiful, positive energy.

Chloe Morello
Originally from Australia, Chloe has earned a diverse group of followers. Chloe loves to share her “get ready with me videos” and is not shy about cosmetic procedures. Chloe’s conscientious nature is expressed through her passion and love for the Arabic culture, and has a strong following in the Middle East as well as the rest of the world. My personal favorite videos on Chloe’s channel are makeup tutorials for the holiday, Eid, in which her makeup compliments a variety of occasions.

There are so many other YouTube channels that offer something for everyone. Among my other favorites are Pixiwoo and Nikkie Tutorials. All of these beautiful women have in depth video tutorials, as well as twitter and Instagram, in addition to their blogs. Even a seasoned makeup veteran can learn new techniques from any of these ladies, and their social media accounts are helpful when looking for new skincare products, makeup lines, or even a smile.

These YouTube videos have been a Godsend to me. I am in my 30s and never got taught by peers how to do my makeup. I moved around a lot as a child so didn’t have that childhood experience and then went straight on to have children, which meant I lacked time to do my makeup.

YouTube is usually my go-to for makeup tips and tutorials. Unfortunately, I don’t bottle enough creativity to exactly mimic the near perfect styles of Jaclyn Hill or Kandee Johnson for example but it has helped me a great deal with looking decent for outings and developing my own personal style.
