A Detox for Body and Mind

By  14 Comments

Many people can feel overly full, bloated, and just kind of tired. That is when we are told to go on a detox, and we obediently cut out things like alcohol, and processed meat, and that is meant to make us feel all better. And let’s admit it, it is certainly true that removing some things from our diets can make us feel a whole lot better: but the truly great detox is one that approaches both your body, and your mind.

We are world of stressed people. Despite having more conveniences than ever, being able to communicate to our loved ones no matter where they are in the world, and many of us living in developed and safe countries, there is a worrying trend in stress, anxiety, and depression. Sadly, one quick detox cannot solve some of those problems, but for many of us that feel that we are trickling down a slippery slope, it can prove to be the catalyst that changes the way that we eat, and think, for ever.

Our bodies and our minds are intrinsically linked. When we feel good about one, we naturally feel good about the other. For example, when you look in the mirror and like what you see, you are much more likely to go about your day with a smile on your face, and that means that you are statistically more likely to be treated better than other people that you encounter. Everyone loves a smiler! However, if you wake up and feel sad and a little down, you are much more likely to reach for a breakfast that contains more fat and sugar than you need, and that initial high will give you an even bigger downer later on in the day – and you’ll put on weight. These positive and negative experiences will eventually become cycles, and you’ll feel happier and happier or sadder and sadder, depending on which one you get stuck on.

But like any cycle, it is possible to break out of it. One of the best ways to do this is to try a detox that doesn’t just focus on your physical health, but also your mental and emotional health. This ensures that you achieve a balance throughout your life, and means that you are much more likely to be able to reap the rewards at the end of it. We have brought together five essential foods to bring into your detox diet. You may have heard of them before, and you may have already known that they were great for your body – but you probably didn’t realise that they were great for your mind, too:

1. Garlic.
Garlic is gorgeous – but as well as tasting great, did you know that garlic is also doing great for your mind? That is because garlic is a natural boost to your immune system. Instead of plugging your body full of unnatural immune enhancers, garlic does all of that for you – making sure that you do not get ill as often. We always feel worse when we are ill, so eating garlic can help you avoid that sad and sniffly days.

2. Lemon grass.
This herb is incredibly popular in Thailand, especially as it considered to be fabulously delicious in stir fries, and within tea. It’s hard to say no to such a proven ingredient, especially when you realise why lemon grass has become so popular in detox circles: because it removes the toxins from not one, not two, not three, but four organs. Your liver, kidneys, bladder, and your digestive tract will all benefit from consuming more lemon grass, and this means that your body will get a natural kick of endorphins when the toxins are removed. And we all know how much our minds love endorphins.

3. Olive oil.
You may be surprised to see olive oil here on our list, but don’t be fooled. It is possible to drizzle some wonderful olive oil on your salad and not only avoid any negative consequences, but actually embrace some good ones. Olive oil is a natural deterrent for gallstones, and has proven to help you to live longer. That’s right: a study in Spain demonstrated that a person that consumed a litre (that’s right, a litre!) of olive oil a week had a reduced risk of stroke and heart disease – even compared to another group that lived on a low-fat diet. Many people believe that olive oil is why Italy has such a high life expectancy rate. Knowing that you are going to live longer definitely does good things for your mind!

4. Wheatgrass.
Wheatgrass shakes have been popular for years, but many people do not realise that its alkaline properties can naturally make us feel more cheerful! Wheatgrass also lowers our blood sugars, and boosts our metabolism – so if you have been struggling to lose weight, introducing wheatgrass into your diet could see you lose those pounds, and improve your mind’s association with exercise.

5. Beetroot.
Who would believe that beetroot is actually a way to manage cancer? Many people love to put beetroots into their salads, or into their lasagnes, and children have always laughed to see how it changed the colour of their teeth. But believe it or not, beetroot deals with free-radicals in your body, which are unstable molecules. What better way to relax your mind than to reassure it that you are dealing with potential problems within your body?

I had no idea that beetroot was so healthy. I will make an extra effort to eat more of this. It is also great on hamburgers and salad sandwiches. The thing that surprised me about this article is that anybody could consume a litre of olive oil in a week. You would have to literally put it in every meal. I don’t think that consuming a litre of olive oil each week is very realistic.

I totally agree with taking time for yourself. It’s so important these days. Even if it’s just half an hour.

I love garlic! I look for any possible excuse to add it to whatever I’m making, and when no excuse can be found I just eat it on it’s own. It’s good to know that olive oil is so good for you – I always thought it was but I’ve tended to shy away from it lately because it seems so high in calories. But I guess in certain situations sometimes it’s worth it?

I actually never knew that garlic had so many health benefits. I use garlic in A LOT of my cooking, now I know that It’s actually healthy. I also did not know about beetroot; it doesn’t sound too appetizing, but I guess mixed in with other things it can be okay.

Most people need a detox for their mind. In today’s generation, it seems almost as if everyone around us is stressed out about something. Obviously body detox is just as important, but we need to take care of our mental sanity as well.

    Very insightful post, thank you.

Yes, very insightful post indeed! It’s so true about the whole mind, body, spirit connection! Never realized though, just how much a detox helps the mind. I agree with Karen, we need to take care of our mental sanity too.

This should be required reading. I never realized that food can make such a difference for your mental state, but it makes perfect sense. I’m guilty of using food as a mood altering substance! But I always feel so guilty, plus I think it brings on some uncomfortable symptoms within a short time.

I’m looking at the clean food diet. I think that even being exposed to articles and groups who are interested in health makes a positive change. I notice that I think more about health and snack a lot less. Your article is very encouraging. I will try to relax more and I think that will help.

Wow, this is a great article. It seems I’m constantly reading about new and easy ways to improve my health. I think it’s great that we as a society have become so health conscious. I have already tried a few of these. I have a lemon grass soup recipe that is excellent, as well as a high fiber chocolate beet cake. I’m not sure I could handle a wheat-grass shake, but olive oil and garlic are essentials. Couldn’t agree more with the last commenter, we need to take care of our mental state as well.

There is really no way that my partner and I would be able to consume 1 liter of Olive Oil a week. But I definitely think we could incorporate beets into our diet, an definitely more lemon grass. I love having lemon grass tea!

I would love to be able to incorporate more Garlic into our diets too. We tend to have garlic salt, rather than just straight garlic. So we’re probably not getting any benefits from the Garlic salt then what we would get from straight garlic.

I do tend to drink a lot of shakes with fruit and veggies, so incorporating wheat grass would be easy. Loved this article, as it definitely points out small things that you can add into your diet to make you feel better and possibly live longer.

This article is wonderful and yes, it’s so true about getting stuck on cycles both negative and positive. I’m currently eating healthier and losing weight; it’s amazing how good I feel which makes me more confident in dealing with others. I’m now inspired to try lemon grass for the first time!

I try to eat garlic twice per week because my mother kept telling me how good it is and consistently made me eat it when I was little. I have to admit that I was a lot less sick than other kids and colds usually didn’t get me or didn’t last as long. Garlic is really amazing for the immune system: every time I eat some I feel like a little superwoman!

WOW, a litre of olive oil per week! That seems a bit too much for me, but then again, if it’s that helpful, it might be worth a try. I love eating olive oil in salads and sometimes I even have a tablespoon of it just because I like it. I think I might be eating almost half a litre weekly.

Thank you for every other magnificent alctire. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such an ideal approach of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I am on the search for such information.

Olive oil and garlic are two things I have come to love with good reason. Garlic is great for the flu season and olive oil is just great all around. There are so many benefits to using it daily, it is just unbelievable! I have never tried wheat-grass but I have heard very good things about it. I will have to get some!

Detoxing is great! It is true that it is possible to break out of a cycle.I love garlic. It sure is tasty. There is a rich Mediterranean dip that is made with nothing but garlic.
With this recipe, you have to bake the garlic bulb for one hour or less.I wish that I knew where to find this recipe, again.I watched how to prepare this dip on the television and that was it.
I cannot remember anymore. Wow! Not only have I not heard of lemon grass, I had no idea that something like this is good for four different organs! So, I guess I better start ordering this and start making tasty teas!
Olive oil is great, too. When I was a child I loved eating beats. All in all, it is not only great to have a healthy body, it is great to have a healthy mind, too!
